What to expect when your GP refers you to a hospital or another service.
Tests and investigations
The specialist will arrange any tests you need and share the results with you. Any appointments will be sent to you by the specialist, along with advice on any actions or follow-up needed. If the specialist orders blood tests, they should give you the form for the test. The specialist is responsible for acting on the test results and informing both you and your GP.
If you haven’t heard about your results, contact the specialist’s secretary at the hospital or service.
Prescriptions
If a specialist prescribes a new medication or changes one you’re already taking, they will give you the first prescription. If the specialist notifies your GP, your practice might automatically add the new medication to your repeat prescription list, so you can order refills without needing an appointment.
If you’re unsure about the changes the specialist is making, ask them to explain it to you.
Follow Up Appointments
If you need a follow-up appointment or a referral to another specialist, the hospital will arrange it for you.
If you don’t receive your appointment on time, please contact the specialist’s secretary.
Sick or Fit Note (Med 3)
If you need a note to show you’re unfit for work because of your treatment, the specialist should give you a fit note (Med3) when you’re discharged from the hospital or service. You don’t need a note if you’re off sick for seven days or less, as you can self-certify for that time.
If you need a sick or fit note (Med3), please ask your specialist for one.
In short, after you’ve been referred, specialists are responsible for:
Arranging and reviewing any tests they’ve requested, and acting on the results Giving you the first prescription for any new or changed medication
Issuing a sick/fit note if you need one for the condition they’re treating
Providing you with a follow-up appointment or referral to another specialist if needed
